New Art and Offers

Graphic Impressions : Tusk Gallery's Picture Framing Division

When most of us hear the term “Picture Framing” it conjures up an image of a middle aged man wearing a cardigan in a cramped, dusty room carefully making frames.

BUT what about the person who designs the frame, the one who foresees how it will end up looking on your wall..... mounts, mouldings, colours, different grades of glass. This person not only needs to understand design and colour but also needs to have a very good understanding of conservation framing and when these materials are needed.

Most people get their art and special pieces framed because they want them to be on display and to say something about themselves, their lives and the spaces they live and work in.
Our staff are all innovative designers who get really excited about designing a frame which will enhance the artwork or item being framed and also to stand the test of time.

When you look at the cost of framing it might seem a bit shocking to you. So here’s my advice.
The first thing you need to decide is whether you want a special price OR a special frame.

There is a big difference. If you only want a quote or are working on a limited budget, it’s a good idea to let our frame designers know at the beginning. We may spend an hour showing you different design ideas that may cost $300, when your budget is $100. If you want a special frame, don’t say anything, that’s what you will get, our staff base their final choice on years of experience in framing design and your agreement.

At Tusk and Graphic Impressions we create a design that will contribute to and be sympathetic to the item being framed, we take into account current trends but we always ask ourselves “What will this look like in 10 years time?”. Compare this to clothing. Smart people buy classic pieces that may cost more but they still look great even 10 years down the track.

If the piece is valuable, rare or just plain special we will then explain conservation framing to you. This is where we use materials that will actually protect the artwork. If the price works out to be beyond your means we then work backwards until we can achieve a design that you are pleased with and also suits your budget.

I just wanted to give you an idea of all that goes into creating a frame that stands out on your wall. There’s a lot more than just putting a frame around your artwork/piece. Sometimes we’ve taken more than an hour just working on the correct design. It’s a bit like a dress designer creating an individual piece for one person.
